Abbey Road

Running through St. John's Wood, near Lord's Cricket Ground and Regent's Park is Abbey Road.

Abbey Road is home to the world-famous Abbey Road Studios, which have been the recording venue for some of the most acclaimed rock albums ever made. Pink Floyd's 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here' were both recorded here as was Radiohead's 'OK Computer'. However, it is The Beatles who have really made this road such a famous landmark.

For seven years from the summer of 1962, The Beatles were to record ninety percent of their music at Abbey Road Studios, and in 1969 decided to call their penultimate album 'Abbey Road'. The album's famous cover shows the four Beatles crossing the pedestrian crossing outside the Studios.

More recently, the Studios have been the venue for recording the scores of many Blockbusters such as 'Star Wars' and 'Lord of the Rings'. It is also reportedly the studio where U2 have recorded their latest album due for release in 2008.

Although the Studios are not open to the public to wander around, a good view can be had from outside and many leave their mark on the graffiti-covered walls outside. The "Abbey Road" sign has long been painted onto a wall, as it was particularly prone to theft, but the world's most famous zebra crossing is still there and London's best photo opportunity for Beatles fans.

Abbey Road is approximately 200 yards west of St John's Wood Tube station, 300 yards east of Maida Vale and 600 yards east of Kilburn Park.
