Docklands

Docklands is the area of East London which was once home to one of the busiest shipping ports in the World but is now home to a mix of commercial and residential buildings following almost three decades of regeneration. The heart of Docklands is the Isle of Dogs, which lies within the characteristic 'U' bend of the River Thames and can be reached using the Docklands Light Railway.

Providing the backdrop to the opening scenes from James Bond's 'The World is not Enough' and more recently '28 Weeks Later', the views across the river to Greenwich and to the O2 Stadium will enhance your holiday snaps.

Docklands presence is more purpose-built than it is engaging, and whilst home to Britain's tallest building, Canary Wharf, its height of 224 metres does not even earn it a place in the top 100 tallest buildings in the world.

A trip south of the river to Greenwich will be more inspiring and so if you only have limited time, opt for a visit to Greenwich and catch the views of Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs from there. That said, if you are visiting in June, be sure to check out the Greenwich and Docklands Festival. If you are heading south to Greenwich you can take a trip beneath the River Thames and walk there by using the Greenwich Foot Tunnel.
