Kew Gardens

For a day's excursion, Kew Gardens, situated on the western edge of the city beside the River Thames, is a great day out in fine weather and can be reached by river boat for those who do not mind the 3-hour-plus round trip.

Founded in 1759, the 300 acres of Royal Botanic Gardens are quite simply a horticulturist's heaven. The site comprises herbaceous bedding, water features, botanical glasshouses, a large arboretum and historic buildings

Of the several glasshouses the beautiful Palm House, which shelters rare orchids and palms, and Evolution House, showcasing 3,500 million years of plant evolution, are among the best.

Other attractions include an aquatic garden, a bamboo garden, a woodland glade, a conservation area and a Japanese landscape. Visitors to Kew can join a guided tour, follow one of several themed trails, or wander around the attractions at their own pace.

Transport to the Gardens is by London Underground to Kew Gardens; or by train from Waterloo to Kew Bridge, which is also served by Silverlink Metro.
