Marble Arch

Located near Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park, Marble Arch is a large marble monument which was originally intended to act as a ceremonial gateway to Buckingham Palace. However, it was later discovered that the sovereign's gold stagecoach was too wide to pass through and so it was moved to its existing location in 1851. Since then, whilst the Arch is an impressive sight, this fine monument has been somewhat neglected. It is only reached in its current location (the middle of a traffic island) by using a subway and there have been talks to once again move the monument to another, more enhancing, location.
