National Theatre

Opened in 1976, the National Theatre houses three auditoriums: The Olivier, which is the biggest of the three, with a capacity of 1,160; The Lyttelton, with a capacity of 890; and the smaller Cottesloe, with a capacity of 400.

Standing next to Waterloo Bridge on the South Bank of the Thames, the main entrance to the National Theatre is at the plaza (Theatre Square) where free outdoor entertainment can be seen during the summer months.

The National Theatre is host to classic dramas and award-winning new plays, including comedies, musicals, and shows for young people. Many of England's most talented actors and directors produce their repertoire of classic and modern plays here.

Visitors have a wide choice of eating places: the restaurant (Mezzanine), the Terrace Cafe, the Circle Cafe, the Espresso bar, and a number of buffets and bars overlooking the river.

Backstage guided tours are held Monday to Saturday, giving a behind-the-scenes insight to the three auditoriums, workshops and backstage areas.
