FA Cup Final

17th May

The FA Cup Final, commonly known in England as the 'Cup Final', takes place in May each year and is the last match in the Football Association Challenge Cup tournament, which is the oldest football tournament in the world.

All teams that are affiliated to the Football Association, including top-flight professional teams as well as non-league amateur and semi-professional teams, can take part in this knockout competition. As a result, there have been some thrilling and memorable matches between the 'underdogs', or 'giant killers', and some very famous teams. One such match took place in 1992 when Wrexham (in the lowest position in the Fourth Divison of the English League), beat Arsenal, who have won the FA Cup ten times and had reached the semi-finals the previous year.

More recently non-League side, Havant and Waterlooville, a team made up of plumbers, refuse collectors, delivery drivers and a school caretaker, played against Liverpool, the most successful club in English football history. Amazingly Havant were the first to score and took the lead for a second time before the match finally ended 5-2 in Liverpool's favour.

The FA Cup Final is a highlight on any football fan's calendar. 2007 in particular was a special year for this fixture, when it celebrated a glorious return to the newly-rebuilt Wembley Stadium.
