State Opening of Parliament
November
The State Opening of Parliament is an ancient ceremony dating back to times when the Monarch and Parliament where on less amicable terms.
A "hostage" is taken from Parliament to Buckingham Palace to ensure the safe return of the Monarch before the Queen leaves for Westminster by horse-drawn carriage.
Wearing the Royal Robes and the Imperial State Crown, the Queen delivers her speech from the throne in the House of Lords to members of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons, who are summoned to the Lords by "Black Rod".
