Nearest Sunday to 11th November

Remembrance Sunday is held on the Sunday nearest to the 11th day of November, which marks the day World War I ended at 11:00, on 11th November 1918 and commemorates all those who have given their lives for freedom from war.

Marked by ceremonies across the UK and the commonwealth, the national ceremony is held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, with wreaths of poppies laid by the Queen, members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, politicians and representatives of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force.

A two-minute silence is held at 11:00 across the country, marked by the firing of a field gun to begin and end the silence.

After the silence, a parade of veterans marches past the Cenotaph, accompanied by the Royal Marines marching band. in a procession in honour of British service men and women.
