Downing Street

The most famous address in Britain, Number 10 Downing Street has been home to the British Prime Minister since 1735. A short walk from the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, it is also the official office of the Prime Minister and the venue for Cabinet meetings. Next door at Number 11 lives the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whilst Numbers 9 and 12 house the Chief Whips, Press Office and Communication Units.

Number 10's famous black door is not open to the public nor are you able to access Downing Street itself. You may be lucky enough to see the Prime Minister or the Chancellor of the Exchequer, although expect armed policed and high security measures at all times.

Downing Street is named after the gentleman who developed the land into housing, Sir George Downing. Downing is described as an 'enterprising rogue' on the official Downing Street website and he was certainly no angel. Perhaps this is why some Ministers have felt so at home here!
