Royal Albert Hall
In Knightsbridge, on the south side of Kensington Gardens, The Royal Albert Hall is one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world.
A memorial to Prince Albert, the Hall was opened by Queen Victoria in 1871 with some of the profits from the 1851 Great Exhibition. It was the success of this Exhibition which led Prince Albert to propose that additional facilities be built for the enlightenment of the public, although his death in 1861 meant he did not live to see his vision materialize.
With a capacity of almost 6,000, the interior is designed around a vast and very elegant amphitheatre and also houses the biggest organ in the British Isles with almost 10,000 pipes.
Hosting more than 350 performances every year, including The Proms, concerts, ballets, opera and sporting events, visitors can also have escorted tours during the day, lasting approximately an hour. Each tour is unique, as visitors may encounter rehearsals of the artists currently performing at the Hall.
