London Underground
The 'Tube' is the oldest and most extensive underground system in the world, pervading both the life and layout of London. The network consists of 12 underground lines, each with a different name and colour, supplemented by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) connecting the city of London and the Docklands. The entire network is divided into six concentric zones, which determine the price of tickets.
Out of all the modes of transport available in London, the tube is by far the most convenient for travelling across the city and is very tourist-friendly. What should be noted however, is that many of the stations in central London are within easy walking distance of one another. For this reason, and to ensure you spend as much time above ground as possible, you will find that where this applies to a particular attraction or event, we have included all stations in the same proximity.
Before setting off sightseeing, it is wise for visitors to study a London Underground map, to get a feel for the straightforward colour-coded system.
There are six zones in total, which dictate ticket prices. You will find the vast majority of attractions listed within this Guide are within zones 1 and 2.
Tickets should be purchased at the station and must be passed through the barrier ticket gates in order for the passenger to enter and leave the system. You can buy a ticket to cover an individual journey or a return journey.
The London Underground operates daily, from approximately 05:30-00:30 but should be avoided (where possible) during rush hour (Monday to Friday 08:00-09:30 and 17:00-18:30), when it is extremely crowded.
There are a number of passes available, including the one-day Travelcard, which can be used on buses and the London Underground. An off-peak card (only valid after 09:30) is cheaper than a peak one (valid from 00:01). Both are valid all night until 04:30 the next morning. Travelcards vary in price depending on the amount of zones covered.
There is also a three-day Travelcard, which is valid on any three consecutive days (peak) along with a one-day pass for the buses only.
